Oronsay sits off the west coast of Scotland, a beautiful island you can see from the mainland. The colours on this coastline have always inspired me—there's something about the quality of light here that feels different from anywhere else. My journeys around Scotland continue to take me to places where the beauty stops you in your tracks.

In this painting, I wanted to capture that sense of weather gathering—the moment when you can feel the storm building, clouds racing across the sky, and the sea responding. The light moves so quickly in the Highlands that you're constantly chasing these fleeting combinations of dark and bright. Working in oil and mixed media lets me build up the texture in the rocks and foreground while keeping those sweeping gestural marks in the sky that convey movement and speed.

It's that dramatic quality of Scottish coastal weather—wild, changeable, and utterly compelling.
