I’ve started something new alongside my visiting lecturer work: one-to-one mentoring for a young student studying an online diploma in fashion and textiles.
School, and the beginnings of college, were really hard for her. The lighting and the crowds brought on sensory overload, and traditional classrooms just didn’t work. Switching to an online course has been a lifesaver for her.
My role is to help her through the course structure. When she’s given a project, I know exactly what it’s asking for. Together we work out how to approach the subject, how to source materials, and which artists to research so their influence can come into her work.
What I wasn’t expecting is how much it gives back. The way these diplomas are structured online is absolutely fascinating to see, and the questions she’s being asked are inspiring me too. It’s inspiring teaching, which is great.
Like maths tutoring, but for artists and creatives. If you’re a student, or a parent supporting one through an art or design course, and one-to-one guidance would help, I’d love to hear from you. Email me direct.
