Me and one of my career influences, Antoni Tàpies [Museu Fundación Juan March, Palma}
October began close to home, at Pallant House Gallery’s British Landscapes: A Sense of Place. [Exhibition ended 1 November] It’s an important show for me because so many of my heroes are in it: Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Ivon Hitchens, Terry Frost, Norman Ackroyd. These artists shaped my Fine Art degree work, and seeing them in the flesh, mapped out as a clear progression from Gainsborough onwards, was really inspiring. I’ve written more about it on the blog.
I’ve also started something new: one-to-one mentoring for art and design students. It’s like tutoring, but for creatives. I’m currently supporting a student through an online diploma in fashion and textiles, helping her make sense of project briefs, source materials and research artists. What I wasn’t expecting is how much it inspires me too. If you know a student who’d benefit, I’d love to hear from you. More about that on my website.
The month ended with a family trip to Palma, and so much art. At the Gerhardt Braun Gallery I loved the work of Lars Teichmann, Maxim Wakultschik and Mikail Akar. Es Baluard had Anna Talens, Ghada Amer, Anselm Kiefer and Jonathan Lasker. Then the Museu Fundación Juan March, with Salvador Dalí, Saul Steinberg (best known for his work for The New Yorker), sculpture by Julio González and Antoni Tàpies, one of my great heroes and a huge influence on my work.
But it was the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró that stayed with me most. Standing in his studio, among his works, brought me to tears.
