Bracklesham Bay, High Tide (2025)
Bracklesham Bay, High Tide (2025)
I think this is one of the best paintings I have ever done. To capture moving splashes and the energy of the sea is a huge challenge, but this piece really captures that wild, dynamic feeling of being right there in the moment.
I've painted this view many, many times (not as much as East Head/West Wittering!) but enough to really understand the feeling and impact I was aiming to achieve. If you've ever spent any time at Bracklesham Bay, you'll know how it feels to be there at the switching of the tide—it develops a raw energy almost out of nowhere. And that's the moment I was hoping to capture.
Working on this large scale allows me to really immerse you in the experience. The brilliant blues of the deeper water contrast beautifully with the whites and pale greens of the churning surf, while the foreground shows all those fascinating patterns and colours left behind by the retreating waves.
I've used a mix of techniques and mediums to build up the texture and movement, layering paint to create that sense of constant motion. My hope is that when you look at this painting, you can feel yourself right there—sensing the sea spray and experiencing that powerful moment when the tide turns.
