Last Light of the Day: West Wittering to the Isle of Wight
Last Light of the Day: West Wittering to the Isle of Wight
The sunsets on West Wittering Beach have become some of my favourite subjects to paint. I don't just see them anymore. I feel their presence, and the challenge is getting that feeling onto canvas.
This is the last light of the day, looking out towards the Isle of Wight. From late February through to April, the sunsets here are extraordinary. Fresh colours emerge in the sky that you don't see at any other time of year: warm golds and pinks breaking through heavier clouds, that path of golden light reflecting across the water, drawing your eye straight to the horizon.
The distant silhouette of the Isle of Wight anchors everything, giving the painting its sense of depth and place. Every sunset teaches me something new about colour, about how light behaves in those final moments before it goes. I'm extremely excited by this one.
