Storm Over West Wittering (2025)
Storm Over West Wittering (2025)
The light that changes down in West Wittering is always shifting, and when a storm rolls in I get so excited because I know that means dramatic light to paint! The rumble of the sea and the light changes over a vista can take your breath away, and this was a day at West Wittering beach that did just that.
As the storm approaches over the blue sky, I literally get goosebumps as I know this is a perfect moment to capture. You don't just see a painting, you feel it—a painting should sustain you and you should be able to feel its power.
To say that I'm pleased with this new piece would be an understatement. Every day I am surprised by colour and mark, and how with measured manipulation and precision I can achieve a powerful moment in time expressed in paint. Working on this large canvas (122×122cm) allows me to create an immersive experience where the drama of the approaching storm feels almost life-sized.
The contrast between the brooding storm clouds and the bright patches of sky creates such drama across the canvas. The wet sand in the foreground reflects all these changing lights and colours, creating an almost mirror-like surface that doubles the impact of the sky above.
I love my local coastline at The Witterings, and feel incredible gratitude to live where I live and to have an artistic career that enables me to share these powerful moments with you.
