Storms Over Rùm and Eigg, Traigh Beach II, Scotland
Traigh Beach on the road from Arisaig to Mallaig is a very special, spectacular beach. I have visited and painted this part of Scotland for over 35 years, and it never fails to inspire me.
I love Rùm and Eigg. Painting the shapes of these unique islands and watching the light shows over the West Coast of Scotland is never a wasted moment. In this piece, those dramatic rain showers are sweeping across the scene whilst the sun breaks through the clouds, creating that incredible golden light that illuminates the water.
The contrast between the dark storm clouds and those brilliant beams of light is what makes these Highland seascapes so powerful. You can see the weather moving, feel the energy of the approaching storm, yet there's also that stunning beauty of light hitting the water.
Capturing light is essential for a painting to sustain longevity and hold your attention, which I believe is what happens to us when confronted by such beauty. It stops you in your tracks, and so does Scotland.
