Summer Tides, East Head, West Wittering
Summer Tides, East Head, West Wittering
As you walk around East Head, I am always captivated by the tides, the sky and the South Downs in the distance. The way they all work together to create this incredible sense of space and light is endlessly inspiring to me.
I have spent many a day walking around East Head in the Witterings, and it is always a place of beauty, stillness and calm. Yet there's also a wonderful energy here—the constant movement of water, the shifting patterns of light on the wet sand, and the way the clouds roll across that vast sky.
This painting captures those rolling clouds over the Downs and East Head, which I am particularly pleased with. I've tried to show the contrast between the deep blues of the sea and the more muted tones of the foreground where the tide has retreated, leaving behind those fascinating textures and colours in the sand.
There is an energy in both the sea and sky that I am always aspiring to capture in my work. The panoramic format allows me to convey that sense of being surrounded by this magnificent landscape, where every visit reveals something new about the interplay between water, land and sky.
