Sunset Rùm and Eigg (2024)
Sunset Rùm and Eigg (2024)
The islands Rùm and Eigg are special gems that sit on the edge of the West Coast of Scotland. I have painted this view for 30 years from Arisaig, and it never loses its power to captivate me. Each time I return to this viewpoint, the light reveals something new about these magnificent islands.
I wanted this painting to express the drama and beauty of these gems caught in a spectacular sunset. The way the light catches the distinctive silhouettes of both islands—Rùm's rugged peaks and Eigg's iconic Sgùrr—creates such a powerful composition against that incredible Highland sky.
The natural beauty of these islands never fails to deliver stunning scenery. The purples and deep blues of the storm clouds contrast beautifully with the golden and coral tones where the sun breaks through, all reflected in the wet sand and shallow waters of the shoreline.
This very special stretch of sea is primarily about these islands—Rùm and Eigg—and the way they command this seascape. Standing on the beach at Arisaig, watching this light show unfold above these ancient volcanic islands, reminds me why I've been drawn back here year after year. It's one of Scotland's most breathtaking views, and I hope this painting captures some of that wild Highland magic.
