Beams of Light Over Ardmeanach, Isle of Mull, Scotland
Ardmeanach has such a distinctive shape, it sits on the Isle of Mull and behind it is Fionnphort. This peninsula, whose Gaelic name means "Middle Headland," has become one of my favourite places to paint over the years. (I love all of the West Coast of Scotland, to be fair!)
At the end of the day, light shows appear on the horizon. This happens at a particular time of day when the sun is going down and the atmospheric conditions are just right. I call these the free light shows from the Isle of Mull—nature's own spectacular performance that costs nothing but delivers everything.
The beams have such power and a mesmerising magic that you just can't help but watch. I've tried to capture that moment when the light streams down through the clouds with real intensity, creating dramatic contrasts across the water and landscape.
This, I hope, comes across in this painting, the way these incredible light displays can transform a familiar view into something truly special.
